Protect your artwork
Before you pack your artwork, make sure it’s thoroughly cleaned and dried. Then make sure you securely attach the hanging wire or picture hook to the back of the frame. It will be much easier to do this now than if it has been packed inside another object, like a box. While you’re at it, remove any glass (if applicable) and make sure it’s packed separately from the artwork. If there are fragile pieces, you might want to think about investing in a protective glass sheet.
Another consideration is plexiglass or glass if your regional carrier allows them to be used. The glass may help protect against further damage but will not be permitted when flying internationally unless an exception is made.
Seal from dust
Dust can quickly damage artwork, so it’s essential to take a few steps to seal it off from the outside world. You can wrap the artwork in a protective sheet-like bubble wrap. Ensure there are no air bubbles and that the wrap is tightly secured with tape. If the artwork is framed, you might want to cover it with a sheet of archival paper before wrapping. Remember, bubble wrap isn’t just for Christmas!
Boxing up
Now that the artwork is wrapped and packaged, it’s time to get ready for your trip via the post office. If you have lots of art to pack, you’ll be thankful for having some spare tubes or cardboard boxes handy. Start with a sturdy box, tube, or container and add layers of packing materials to protect from damage.
Protect the artwork against heavy items by placing them at one end of the box/tube/container; bubble wrap is excellent for this purpose. When using bubble wrap, make sure it’s tightly attached to the item and not just loosely placed inside.
If you’re posting or sending more than one piece, box them up separately in bubble wrap, paper or cardboard to avoid scratches. It will also be easier to pack them this way if they are different sizes. If they are framed, make sure it’s safely packed before boxing.
Add your shipping information
The final step is to add your shipping information. This includes the name and address of both the sender and the receiver and the package weight and dimensions. Shipping art networks by the courier can be a costly affair, so make sure you’re aware of the cost before sending.
